Starting a new blog often feels like stepping into unknown territory. For me, this journey is not just about sharing thoughts but reconnecting with a deeper, more tactile way of writing. I have always loved writing, but my previous blog, The Nonbinary Polyhistor, was a unique space where I combined scientific articles, personal stories, and even haikus. Now, I want to continue writing, but with a fresh approach that honors the physical act of writing by hand before typing it out.
Writing by hand connects me to my body and senses in a way typing never has. This blog post shares my experience and plans for this new chapter, exploring how handwritten words can enrich creativity and presence.

Rediscovering the Power of Handwriting
In today’s digital world, typing has become the default way to write. It’s fast, convenient, and easy to edit. Yet, I find typing often feels disconnected from the creative process. Writing by hand slows me down and makes me more aware of each word, each letter, and the flow of my thoughts.
Handwriting engages the brain differently. Studies show it can improve memory retention and creativity. For me, it also adds a somatic dimension — the physical feeling of pen on paper grounds my thoughts and emotions.
As the pen glides across the surface, I can tune into the tactile feedback of the paper and the weight of the pen, fostering a sense of grounding and presence. This practice encourages me to notice how my body responds to the rhythm of writing, observing any tension or relaxation that arises. By engaging in this mindful act, I can cultivate a deeper connection to my emotions and thoughts, allowing for a holistic integration of mind and body. This connection helps me express myself more honestly and deeply.
When I wrote for The Nonbinary Polyhistor, I mostly typed. The blog was a mix of scientific insights and personal reflections, which sometimes felt like two different worlds. Handwriting offers a way to blend these worlds more naturally. I can start with a handwritten draft that captures raw ideas and feelings, then refine them when typing for the blog.
Combining Science, Stories, and Poetry
One of the joys of my previous blog was the variety of content. I wrote scientific articles that explored complex ideas, shared personal stories that revealed my journey, and crafted haikus that captured moments in just a few words. This mix reflected my identity as a nonbinary polyhistor — someone curious about many fields and experiences.
In this new blog, I want to keep that diversity but with a fresh rhythm. Handwriting short texts first allows me to experiment with form and tone. For example:
Scientific reflections can start as handwritten notes or sketches, helping me visualize concepts.
Personal stories become more intimate when first written by hand, as if confiding in a close friend.
Haikus and poetry benefit from the slow pace of handwriting, encouraging careful word choice and rhythm.
This process also makes the transition to typed posts smoother. I can edit and polish without losing the original voice and emotion.
Why This Matters to Me
Writing has always been a way to understand myself and the world. The act of handwriting adds a layer of mindfulness and presence that typing alone cannot provide. It slows me down, encourages reflection, and connects me to my body.
By sharing this journey, I hope to inspire others who feel overwhelmed by digital writing or who want to deepen their creative practice. Handwriting can be a bridge between thought and expression, science and story, mind and body.
