Know the place before you decide

Sárkányos Vajáklak logo

Sárkányos Vajáklak is a small place in Taliándörögd used for selected Whole in One residential programmes and other place-based work. The setting is part of the experience. For that reason, this page is not only about atmosphere: it is here to help you understand what arriving, staying and spending a weekend here may actually be like.

The place

Sárkányos Vajáklak is a simple rural setting rather than a hotel, conference centre or purpose-built retreat venue.

The house, outdoor areas, paths, weather, shared spaces and practical limitations are part of the environment.

Before joining a residential programme, you should be able to decide whether that environment is workable for you.

Getting here

Taliándörögd can be reached by bus from Tapolca, Kapolcs or Veszprém.

From Budapest, the simplest option is usually to take a direct bus to Kapolcs, then continue by bus from Kapolcs to Taliándörögd. Another option is to travel to Veszprém or Tapolca first and continue by bus from there.

From Vienna, you can take a FlixBus to Keszthely or a train to Győr, then continue via Győr–Tapolca or Győr–Veszprém, followed by a local bus to Taliándörögd. The full journey from Vienna usually takes around 6–8 hours by public transport.

From Budapest, the journey takes around 3.5-4 hours. Best route is the direct bus to Kapolcs, and then a bus to Taliándörögd.

It is best to travel to the Taliándörögd autóbusz-váró bus stop. The house is about a 4–5 minute walk from there. At the Y-junction in front of the Lutheran church, take the left-hand road uphill.

  • By car: You are also welcome to drive. With participants’ permission, I am happy to connect people who may want to organise car-sharing. There is space for approximately 2–3 cars to park on the street in front of the house, up to the neighbouring property.

  • There is a short uphill section on the walk to the house, so please take this into account when travelling with luggage.

  • Detailed arrival instructions for each programme will be included in the individual programme description.

Terrain and movement

The property includes outdoor terrain rather than fully level, step-free access.

Before booking, participants will be given practical information about:

  • paths and steps

  • slopes or uneven ground

  • weather exposure

  • movement between indoor and outdoor spaces

  • any mobility limitations relevant to that particular programme

If mobility or terrain would determine whether you can participate, please ask before registering.

Sleeping

Sárkányos Vajáklak offers several different sleeping options. For each residential programme, I will specify in advance which options are available and how participant accommodation is planned.

Camping in the garden
You are welcome to bring your own tent. A limited number of tents belonging to Vajáklak may also be available.

Caravan
The caravan has two sleeping areas, each of which can accommodate two people. When participants do not know each other or do not wish to sleep directly next to another person, I use the caravan for a maximum of two people.

Back bedroom
The room has two fixed beds and one more comfortable guest bed. Two additional camping beds can be added if necessary, but I consider the room comfortably usable by a maximum of three people.

Living room
The living room contains two sofa beds that can each open into a double sleeping space, as well as one single sofa. If participants do not wish to share a sleeping surface, three separate sleeping places can technically be created, although I generally consider the room more comfortable for two people.

In rainy weather, the living room may also be used as the main indoor space for group activities. Anyone sleeping there should therefore expect the room to be rearranged for shared programme use in the morning.

Sleeping arrangements are agreed separately for each residential programme. I do not assume that two participants will be comfortable sharing a bed or sleeping directly beside one another simply because the furniture technically allows it.

Future attic space
Conversion of the attic into additional sleeping space is planned over the next few years. It is not currently part of the available accommodation.

Bedroom

Not accessible for guests. The facilitator(s)' sleeping place.

If sleeping arrangements, privacy, or a particular type of bed are important for your participation, please ask about this before registering.

Bathrooms and quiet space

Sárkányos Vajáklak has two bathrooms.

Outdoor-access guest bathroom
The guest bathroom is accessed directly from outside, making it easy to use for participants staying:

  • in tents in the garden;

  • in the caravan;

  • or in the back bedroom.

This bathroom remains accessible at night without having to pass through anyone’s sleeping space.

Indoor master bathroom
The second bathroom is inside the house and can only be reached through the main bedroom.

During the day, both bathrooms are available for participants to use.

When the bedroom is being used for sleeping, however, the indoor bathroom is not accessible to other participants in order to preserve the privacy of those sleeping there. During those hours, only the outdoor-access guest bathroom is available.

For each residential programme, the practical information will make clear how sleeping arrangements and bathroom access are organised.

Quieter spaces
There is no permanently designated quiet room at Sárkányos Vajáklak, but during programmes we aim to leave room for participants to step away for a while and use a quieter part of the house or garden when needed.

Food

Unless stated otherwise on the individual programme page, residential weekends are planned around meals from Friday dinner to Sunday lunch.

Each programme will state:

  • what meals are included

  • how food is organised

  • which dietary requirements can realistically be accommodated

  • any limits that are important to know before registering

If food restrictions would determine whether you can attend, please ask before booking.

Sensory environment

A rural setting can be quieter in some ways and more unpredictable in others.

Depending on season and weather, you may encounter:

  • insects and other animals

  • outdoor smells and sounds

  • changing temperatures

  • natural light and darkness

  • weather-related noise

  • sounds from other people sharing the house

  • differences between indoor and outdoor sensory environments

The aim is not to describe the place as universally calming. It may feel supportive to some people and demanding to others.

Programme information will include relevant seasonal details where possible.

Connectivity

Phone reception and internet access may not function in the same way as in an urban environment.

If reliable connectivity is essential for you during the weekend, please check the current information before registering.

Safety and choice remain relevant throughout the weekend.
